The research conducted by Dr Rivas focuses on biorefining and the optimisation of processes aimed at fractioning the main components of biomass to achieve individualised usability. This way, added value products can be derived with prebiotic and antioxidant properties, which may be of interest to both the food and pharmaceutical industries. Dr Rivas also researches how to produce building blocks as precursors of other substances derived from biomass and of industrial interest, which may become a sustainable alternative to non-renewable resources.
